Decision logicCan I afford it in Europe?
The useful question is not only “Can I pay this today?”. A safer decision checks whether you can still keep a monthly reserve after rent, bills, food, transport and other recurring costs.
If the result looks tight, test a cheaper city, lower rent, smaller one-time expense or higher savings buffer before making the commitment.
GreenLooks manageable: a useful reserve remains after costs.
YellowTight budget: test lower rent or a stronger reserve.
RedHigh pressure: the cost may take too much of income.
ChecklistBefore you commit
- housing cost stays within a realistic share of net income
- bills, transport and food are counted separately
- deposit or setup costs do not wipe out all cash
- a reserve remains after the first month
Common mistake: checking only the advertised rent and ignoring utilities, commute, deposit, furniture and the first-month cash buffer.
